The primary responsibility of this division is summer and winter maintenance of Winchester's 83 miles of paved/improved roads and 9 miles of gravel/unpaved roads and also:
* Maintaining and opening all waterways & runoffs.
* Sweeping streets.
* Roadside mowing.
* Winter plowing and sanding.
* Maintenance and installation of drainage systems.
* Preparation and installation of street and traffic signs.
* Street and walkway brush cutting.
* Cutting/removal if dead trees along roads.
* Placing and maintaining trash receptacles on Main Street and Parks
* Leaf Pickup

The Director of Public Works plans, organizes, supervises and inspects work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public streets, drainage systems and bridges, water source and distribution systems, sanitary sewage collection and disposal systems, cemeteries and trees and parks.

The Foreman of Street Department supervises work activities in the construction, maintenance and repair of town streets, bridges, culverts, sidewalks and other municipal facilities; in emergency, may operate construction equipment; performs related work as required.

Leaf Pick Up Schedule 2009

Leaf pickups are scheduled for early November. Each street will only be covered once. There will be no late pickups this year.

Streets South of Route 44 will be picked up on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 9th and 10th.

Streets North of Route 44 will be picked up on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12th and 13th.

Leaves must be in heavy biodegradeable paper bags and should be under 50 lbs. in weight. ONLY LEAVES SHOULD BE PLACED IN BAGS FOR PICKUP. Leaves in plastic bags and bags containing leaves mixed with other items will not be picked up.

Bags should be left at curbside by 7 am. They may also be brought to the Barkhamsted Landfill. No leaves will be accepted at the Town Garage.
