Van Policy

Van rides are available for Winsted residents age 55 and older and Winsted residents who are disabled. Rides are available within Winsted, Monday through Friday. Van services are curb to curb. Riders must call at least 24 hours in advance  to arrange a ride. Rides are offered on a first come first served basis. When the schedule is full, rides will be denied. Due to the volume of passengers, there must only be one stop per ride. Passengers needing assistance must bring an aide, as the driver is not allowed to leave the van to assist. Passengers must wear their seatbelts. The suggested donation per ride is $1. Riders are not required to make a donation. Donations are used to help defray the cost of running and maintaining the van.

The first ride of the day for medical appointments is at 8:45 a.m. and the last ride home from medical appointments is at 3 p.m. Appointments must not be made before 9 a.m. or after 1:30 p.m., as we cannot guarantee your ride home.

For shopping or errands, we pick up at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday or Friday mornings to go to the store and at 10:30 a.m. to go home. On Monday through Friday, we pick up shoppers at 1:15 p.m. to go to the store and at 2:30 p.m. to go home. Shoppers are allowed no more than 4 bags per person.

Passengers must be ready on time for their pickup. Pickup times are not exact. The van may arrive up to 15 minutes before or after the assigned pickup time. The driver may wait up to 5 minutes before moving on to the next passenger. He will not return if the person is not ready when he shows up. A "no-show" is any occurrence where the passenger does not show up for a scheduled ride or declines to take the ride when the drivers arrives for the pickup. The driver will document each "no-show". Each passenger shall be allowed not more than 3 "no-shows". After "2 no-shows", the passenger will be verbally warned that he/she will be suspended from riding the van for six months if he/she is a "no-show" a third time. After a third "no-show", the Senior Center Director will send the passenger a written notice of the six month suspension.

The driver will make every effort to deliver passengers on time for appointments. When a passenger is finished with his/her appointment, they must call the Senior Center office to let the staff know that they are ready to go home. Due to the volume of passengers, there will be times that a rider will have to wait for a ride home.

The Senior Center reserves the right to deny transportation to anyone who abuses the services, whose conduct interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle, who disrupts vehicle scheduling, or who behaves in a way that is offensive to other passengers or drivers. The following activities are not allowed on the Senior Center van:

  1. Smoking, carrying a lighted cigarette, cigar, or pipe, use of a match or fire producing device;
  2. Consumption of food or drink;
  3. Possession and/or use of illegal drugs of alcohol;
  4. Entering the van while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs;
  5. Playing of radios, tape or CD players without earphones;
  6. Lack of shirt, pants, shoes, or clothing in a condition objectionable to other passengers;
  7. Use of profanity or vulgar language;
  8. Acting in a manner threatening to the safety of the driver or passengers;
  9. Carrying a weapon;
  10. Pets (with the exception of service animals);
  11. Yelling or loud, boisterous talking;
  12. Defacing or damaging the van;
  13. Littering;
  14. Carrying gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable liquids;
  15. Standing up or moving around while the van is in motion;
  16. Refusal to comply with valid, reasonable instructions from the driver.

The driver may deny entry to a potential passenger who is in violation of any of the above activities.

If Winsted schools are closed, the Senior Center is also closed and van rides will not be available. If schools open late or dismiss early, we make a decision about transportation on a case by case basis.

Because the van is purchased with a grant from the Dept. of Transportation, the Senior Center is required to keep information about our passengers. We will ask for each passenger's name, address, phone number, and date of birth. This information is kept confidential.
