Civil Preparedness Office Issues Suggestions for Preparation Ahead of Tropical Storm Henri

The Town of Winchester Civil Preparedness Office is monitoring National Hurricane Center forecasts concerning Tropical Storm Henri.  The current forecast track takes the storm near the New England Coast in the Sunday-Monday time frame. It is unknown at this point if the storm will be a hurricane or a tropical storm, or what parts of Connecticut will feel effects of the storm.  Residents should monitor local TV or radio stations for weather forecasts and information about the storm.

Eversource has notified the towns that they are preparing for possible storm impacts in the Sunday to Monday time period.  A meeting is planned for Friday with all public safety department heads to discuss what preparations need to be made for the possibility of impacts from the storm.  Residents should take the opportunity to survey their property at this time and prepare to store lawn furniture and other loose objects that could blow around and cause damage in strong winds.

Recommended items for an emergency supply kit include the following:

  • Water and non-perishable food  for several days
  • Extra cell phone battery or charger
  • Battery-powered or hand  crank  radio  that  can  receive NOAA Weather Radio tone  alerts  and  extra  batteries 
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Whistle to signal for  help
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Non-sparking wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener (if kit contains  canned  food)
  • Local maps

Additional items to consider adding to an emergency supply kit include:

  • Prescription medications and glasses
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Pet food, water and supplies for your pet
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a  portable  waterproof container
  • Cash and change
  • Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Feminine supplies, personal hygiene items and hand sanitizer
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and disposable utensils, paper towels
  • Paper and pencil, books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
